On November 12, 2017 the Babycape “Richard Oldendorff” (118,532 tdw built 2011) arrived at the Go Gia buoys in South Vietnam with the largest ever bulk cargo to be discharged in South Vietnam. The vessel berthed at the transhipment platform “Lena” with a cargo of about 115,000 mt, to unload a part cargo of 74,634 mt of coal into lighters for South Vietnam customers with restricted draft ports. After lightering in South Vietnam the “Richard Oldendorff” will proceed to Campha port in North Vietnam to discharge the remaining 40,000 mt of coal on-board.
The Vietnam transhipment operation is an alliance between Welhunt, a commodity trader that is very active in coal trading in Vietnam. Oldendorff Carriers, who provide the ocean transportation, and Haivan Shipping Services Corporation (Haivanship) who is providing Vietnam domestic waterway transportation services. The alliance is set up to provide a safe, reliable and cost efficient bulk delivery service to power stations and industrial users in South Vietnam. This Platform in South Vietnam capable of discharging and loading all bulk carriers up to and including Newcastlemax (210,000 tdw) at a discharge rate of up to 25,000 metric tonnes per day. This platform will be the first and only multi-user facility in Vietnam and is specificallly designed to be able to handle growing coal imports.
Vietnam has a fast growing demand for imported coal due to the current and planned construction of coal fired power stations. The power stations are being built in clusters at ports on the Mekong River delta that have restricted draft. The 3-partner alliance offers all coal consumers in South Vietnam the possibility of importing coal from many sources at competitive prices and with minimal risk.
Welhunt is an international integrated trading house with exposures in Metal, Agricultural and Energy business worldwide. Welhunt is currently the largest coal importer into Vietnam, delivering over 3 million tons of coal per annum to this market alone. Oldendorff Carriers is a family owned dry bulk shipping company normally operating a fleet of over 600 vessels. The fleet ranges in size from Handysize (35,000 tdw) up to Newcastlemax (210,000 tdw). In 2013, the company embarked on a newbuilding program with over 50 eco-ships under construction or recently delivered. The company operates 7 transshipment operations worldwide handling in excess of 30 million tonnes per annum.
Haivan Shipping Services Corporation (Haivanship) is a Vietnamese private company
providing domestic waterway transportation services. Haivanship is operating its owned
facilities including barges, tugboats, midtream buoys, stevedoring offering to client
a full set of services to dispatch large Ocean Going Vessels quickly and smoothly.
